of Sickle Cell disease, we are also studying

hypokalemic psiodic pralysis, multiple
myeloma and HIV infection.
Sickle Cell Clinic & Molecular Biology Laboratory is functioning as a unit in V.S.S. Medical College, Burla; a tertiary care referral Hospital situated in Western Orissa.Western Orissa has a high gene frequency for sickle cell mutation and prevalent for related hemoglobinopathies thus a major health burden in this region.
Mission :
Evaluation of Sickle
cell hemoglobinopathies and Thalassemias through biochemical methods and
Molecular Biology techniques.
Identify the genetic
factors contributing to the diverse clinical severity of the sickle cell
disease.
Treatment of the patients
suffering from these diseases in the region of high prevalence of the
disease.
Develop a
comprehensive strategy for extending health services to these patients
through carrier detection , marital counseling and treatment services.
Funding: Government of Orissa,
India.
Infrastructure: Since the clinic is situated in a sickle cell disease
prevalent geographic location with the sickle cell diagnostic facilities. It
provides a suitable area for research activity.
Activity:
Screening and Diagnosis of scd:
Routine screening for scd is done by sickle slide test.
Final diagnosis of sickle cell disease/ trait is done by agarose gel
electrophoresis.
Detailed
Record Keeping of the Sickle Cell patients
Counselling & Treatment:
Sickle cell disease patients are referred to this unit for outdoor
consultation and counselling.
